43 ◆ <the YARD 기고문> 유학생으로써 줄리어드에서 살아남는 법 (2012. 11월 27일)

작년 9월, 세계 최고의 음악학교라 불리는 줄리어드에 오며 모든 것이 순조롭게 진행될 것이라고 생각했던 것은 나의 큰 실수였다. 가족의 품을 떠나 머나 먼 타지에서 모국어가 아닌 언어로 소통하며 교육을 받는 다는 것은 생각보다 훨씬 힘들고 어려웠다. 아마도 이것은 모든 유학생들이 겪고 있는 어려움일 것이다. 보다 나은 음악가가 되기 위해 오게 된 줄리어드에서 나는 항상 걱정과 불안감이 앞섰다. 특히, 혼자 연습실에 악기를 들고 앉아 있으면 이런 저런 생각이 들었다. 가족들이 나에게 가지고 있는 기대감을 충족시켜야 한다는 압박감, 불확실한 미래에 대한 불안감, 아니 그보다도 코앞으로 다가온 영어로 해야되는 프레젠테이션이 주는 압박감은 상상을 초월했다. 나는 나와 같은 마음의 짐을 어깨에 매고 매일같이 걱정에 가득 차있을 유학생들을 대표하여 이 글을 쓰려고 한다.
나에게 줄리어드에 온 이후로 가장 힘든 점이 무엇이냐고 물어본다면, 나는 한치의 망설임도 없이 ‘언어’라고 대답 할 것이다. 언어는 모든 유학생들이 공통적으로 가장 어려움을 겪는 부분이다. 나는 언어의 습득이 경험과 훈련의 축적에 의하여 가능하다고 생각한다. 언어훈련은 ‘엄마’ 혹은 ‘아빠’라는 가장 단순한 단어에서부터 학교와 사회생활을 거치며 타인과의 의사소통에 의해 끊임없이 이루어진다. 그렇게, 언어란, 수학이나 과학과 같이 교육을 통해 습득되는 것이 아니라, ‘언어를 배운다’는 개념없이 무의식적으로 어느새 우리에게 스며드는 것이다. 예를 들어 영어를 사용하는 원어민에게 당신의 언어가 문법적으로 어떻게 구성되었는지 설명을 부탁하면 잘 하지 못할 수도 있다. 하지만 그들은 어떤 문장이 문법적으로 맞고 틀린 지는 구분할 수 있을 것이다. 이에 반해 유학생에게 누군가가 문법의 설명을 요구한다면 이미 책 몇 권을 쓸 수 있을 정도로 그에 대한 지식이 많기에, 대답하는 데 어려움을 겪는 학생들은 많지 않다. 그러나 그런 유학생들이라도 수업시간이나 레슨 중에, 심지어는 엘리베이터에서 마주친 친구와의 대화 중에도 자신이 어떤 말을 하고 있는지 모른다거나 혹은 말하는 도중 갑자기 단어가 떠오르지 않아 식은땀을 흘린 적이 한 두 번이 아닐 것이다.
하지만 유학생의 비율이 높은 줄리어드의 교수님들은 영어가 유창하지 않은 학생들을 나름의 방식대로 보살펴 주시기 때문에 유학생들이 영어로 인해 받는 스트레스가 조금이나마 덜하다고 생각한다. 게다가, 생각해보면 한국은 많은 단어가 외래어로 사용되고 있기 때문에 나의 경우엔 한국학생으로써 영어에 적응하기가 훨씬 쉬웠던 것 같다. 적어도 아이스크림이 영어로 무엇인지 몰라서 못 먹었다던가 사전을 찾아보아야 했던 적은 없었으니까!
처음에 한국에서 온 학생으로써 The Yard에 한국어로 글을 써달라는 제안을 받았을 때 조금 어리둥절했다. 어떠한 이유로 한국어로 된 글을 영자 신문에 싣고자 하는 것인지 의문이 들었다. 생각해보면 줄리어드에는 한국 학생들의 비율이 높다. 교내를 돌아다니다 보면 한국어가 여기저기서 들려오고, 한 수업마다 적어도 한 명의 한국인 학생이 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 이 곳엔 다른 학교와 다르게 ‘한인 학생회’와 같은 단체가 없다. 한국 학생끼리 서로 모여 힘든 일을 털어놓고 의지할 수 있는 마땅한 곳이 없다는 것이다. 심지어 새로 온 한국 학생이 영어를 잘 못한다거나 미국 문화를 아직 잘 모른다는 이유로 꺼려하는 재학생들이 있는데, 개구리 올챙이적 생각 못한다고, 예전의 자기 자신을 되돌아 보라고 말해 주고 싶다.분명히 자기 자신도 새로 온 학생들처럼 새로운 환경에 적응하지 못해 힘들어했던 적이 있을 것이다. 향후에 줄리어드에 한인 학생회가 생기면 더욱 좋겠지만 그렇지 않는다고 해도 한국학생들이 이 먼 나라에 같이 있다는 이유 하나 만으로 서로를 의지하고 도와줄 수 있는 마음가짐을 가졌으면 한다.
싸이의 강남스타일이 한국인들 뿐만 아니라 미국인들에게도 인기를 얻을 정도로 전세계가 세계화 되어가고 있는 이 시대에 문화적 충격을 경험하는 일은 드물다. 물론 서로 다른 두 나라의 문화적 차이가 아예 없는 것은 아니다. 내가 느낀 문화적 차이는 수업시간에 나타났다. 아직도 생생히 기억나는 선생님과의 첫 레슨은 선생님의 질문으로 시작해서 질문으로 끝이 났다. 선생님께서는 선생님이 나에게 무엇을 해야되는지 알려주시는 한방향 렛슨이 아닌 학생인 내가 참여하고 의견을 제시하는 쌍방향 렛슨을 원하셨던 것이다. 선생님은 내가 어떠한 운지를 사용해야 하는지, 어떠한 표현을 해야 좋을지 끊임없이 질문하셔서 날 당혹스럽게 만들었다. 레슨 시간뿐만 아니라, 수업시간에도 선생님들의 질문 공세는 끊이질 않는다. 많은 한국의 학생들은 수동적인 교육을 받는데, 수동적인 교육은 이론을 받는 것에만 집중이 되어있는 경향이 있다. 예를 들어 화성학을 배운다면, 한국에서는 화성학을 통한 본인의 음악적 생각과 아이디어를 가질 수 있는 자질을 키워주기보다는, 음악 자체에 대한 분석에 치우쳐져 있다. 실직적으로 와닿는 것이 없기 때문에 관심은 줄어들고, 관심이 없는 이상 음악을 하며 화성학 시간에 배운 것들을 실질적으로 사용하지 않게 되는 것이다. 나는 그런 교육방식으로 인해 많은 한국학생들이 더 나은 음악가 혹은 예술가가 될 수 있는 기회를 잃게 된다고 생각한다. 실제로 나의 경우엔 선생님께서 항상 답을 알려주시던 때와 달리 선생님의 질문에 내가 답을 찾아감로써 내가 배운 지식이 탁상공론에 그치지 않고 실생활에 적용 가능 한 지식이 되어가는 것을 느꼈다. 그와 같이 음악에 대해 항상 질문하는 좀 더 적극적이고 비판적인 자세를 취하게 도와주는 줄리어드의, 혹은, 미국의 교육방식을 통해 우리는 조금 더 성숙한 음악가의 모습을 지니게 될 것이라고 나는 생각한다.
유학생으로써 줄리어드에서 살아남는 방법은 과연 무엇일까? 나는 ‘모든 일에 자신감을 가지는 것’이라고 말하고 싶다. 미국인 학생들에 비해 유학생들은 언어, 문화적 차이, 부담감, 외로움 등 많은 어려움이 있다. 나는 많은 유학생들이 자신감 부족으로 눈 앞의 기회를 놓치는 것을 많이 보았다. 자신감 부족의 이유는 대부분 앞에서 말한 것과 같이 미국인 학생들과 정서가 맞지 않아서, 새로운 교수법에 적응하지 못해서, 혹은 영어가 유창하지 않아서이다. 처음에 이곳에 왔을 때의 나는 영어에 대한 자신감 부족으로 매사에 소극적이였다. 물론 지금도 영어가 유창하지는 않지만 이전과는 다르게 적극적인 자세로 임하는 게 중요하다는 것을 깨닫고 자신감을 가지고 영어를 말하려고 노력한 결과 영어에 대한 두려움 때문에 모든 걸 시작하기도 전에 포기하지 않게 되었다. 자신감의 유무는 많은 것을 좌지우지한다. 예를 들자면, 무대에서 연주하는 음악가가 아무리 훌륭한 테크닉과 풍부한 음악적 감성을 지녔다고 해도 자신감이 없다면 그것은 사상누각이 아닌가. 자신감은 성공으로 이끄는 제 1의 비결이라는 말이 있듯이 자신감을 가지고 비록 몇 번의 실패에 좌절하지 않고 끝까지 밀고 나갈 수 있는 강인한 의지와 신념이 있다면 공연 예술을 배우는 학생들의 잠재 된 기회의 장소, 이곳 줄리어드에서 자신에게 다가 온 기회를 놓치지 않고 포착하는, 독립된 예술가로써의 자신을 발견할 수 있지 않을까.

It was a mistake to think that everything was going to work out smoothly, like in the movies, when I arrived at Juilliard in September 2011. It was a lot harder to study alone in a faraway land speaking a different language. Whenever I was by myself in a practice room, I started thinking about all the worst possible scenarios in my future. Every day was filled with non-music-related worries at the school where I came to advance further in my music. I felt pressure because of my family’s high expectations, uncertainty about the future, and above all, stress about the presentation that I had to give in English in several days! I am writing today to show how an international student experiences all of these burdens.
If someone asked me what the most difficult part of coming to Juilliard was, I would answer without hesitation that it was language. Language is probably the hardest obstacle to overcome for all international students. I believe language acquisition occurs from the accumulation of experience and practice. Beginning with the simplest words, “mom” and “dad,” the continuous communication with others in school and the community allows us to grow our language skills. We naturally acquire a language without realizing the concept of learning. For example, native English speakers may not be able to explain English grammar. Nonetheless, they would be able to distinguish what is grammatically correct. On the other hand, most international students are experts in English grammar. However, they often experience tense situations where certain words are forgotten during classes, lessons, or even conversations with friends. Nevertheless, I found out that as an international student, I was not as stressed out as I could have been because the professors at Juilliard have been dealing with so many international students that they are very considerate of us not being able to speak fluent English. Also, unlike other countries whose words may not include many loanwords from English, Korean uses a lot of English words, which made it easier for me to adapt. At least, I never had to look up how to buy ice cream in the dictionary because I did not know the word in English−ice cream in Korean is “ice cream,” too.
When I was asked to write an article in Korean for The Yard, I was confused and wondered why someone would want to have a Korean article in an English newspaper? Now that I come to think of it, there are a lot of Korean students at Juilliard. We can easily hear conversations in Korean everywhere on campus and there is at least one Korean student in each class. Nonetheless, I realized that there are no Korean student organizations at the school, unlike in other schools, which means there are no places for the Korean students to gather and share their difficulties to gain comfort. Moreover, there are returning Korean students who try to avoid new Korean students for irrational reasons, like them not speaking English well or them being “FOBs” (“Fresh Off the Boat”), which makes me wonder if they remember their first time here in the United States. I am sure they also had a hard time because they could not adapt to the new environment well. I hope the Korean students at Juilliard can have a mindset to help others in this faraway country.
In the generation where Psy’s “Gangnam Style” is popular not only in Korea but also in the United States, culture shocks have become rarer. Of course, there are still differences between the two countries. One of my culture shock experiences came from my very first lessons with my guitar teacher. In lessons with Korean teachers, the teacher usually told me what I had to do. However, my teacher at Juilliard continuously asked me which fingering I should use or what expression would be more effective, which really baffled me. My first lesson started with a question and ended with a question. It was my first time experiencing bidirectional education where I am not only told what to do but also expected to participate and share my opinions. Bidirectional education also happens in other courses; the teachers never stop asking questions. Most students in Korea receive a passive learning where the theories are presented and any thought development or opinion forming is not the focus. If music theory is being taught, the true purpose of the study should be to cultivate the talents of a musician. However, in Korea, the theories are oftentimes presented alone. If the student is not interested in his or her own individual thoughts of music composition and what music consists of, only theories are learned. Students lose interest and never think of relating the theories to their practice of music. It becomes only the music theory that exists within the classroom. I believe many students lose the opportunity to become better musicians or artists due to unidirectional education. In my case, I realized my knowledge became an applicable piece of life as I searched for answers to my teacher’s questions. I think that through the Juilliard—or American—educational method, which cultivates a more active and critical attitude through continuously asking questions, we will become more mature musicians.
What is the secret to surviving at Juilliard as an international student? I believe it is being confident. Compared to the American students, international students often have more difficulties at the school, such as language, cultural differences, and loneliness, but I have also seen many international students who did not manage to thrive well in school because they lacked confidence. For me, I did not have many friends and was always alone at first because I was ashamed of my lack of English skills. Even now, although I often forget certain words during conversations and try to use body language to explain myself, I have realized that I need to be more active and confident in speaking English. The presence of confidence changes many things. For instance, lack of confidence of a musician on stage often leads to an unsuccessful performance regardless of superb technique or keen musical sensibility. I strongly believe confidence is the first step for success; having strong will and faith to continue trying even after failures will allow you to find yourself as an independent artist who does not miss out on opportunities at Juilliard, a place filled with potential opportunities in the performing arts.
