7 preschool must

Just because your little one isn starting big kid school, doesn mean he doesn need to go back to school shopping.

Last year, when I was a rookie preschool mom, I remember feeling like an idiot when I showed up for the first day of school without labeling my son clothing. GASP!

Hopefully <a href=http://www.badinel.com/imagenes/abercrombieespanaoutlet.asp?precio=255&camisetas-polo-abercrombie-originales/>camisetas polo abercrombie originales</a>
your school has already provided you with a list but even if so, there are probably things they left out that you need to think about. To help you avoid your own crap moment (sorry, this is a family blog), here a list of 7 things you should consider buying before the first day of preschool.

1. A sturdy backpack This is essential for carrying important stuff like crafts, show and tell items and parent paperwork to and from school. Don forget to check out the size of the pack before buying though. Many brands (including Pottery Barn Kids) make a preschooler size which is much better for their little frames especially for the 2 year olds.

This year, despite the fact that the boys begged me to buy them this one (I mean, I all for freedom of backpack but come on)

we ended up with these awesome retro Superman and Batman backpacks from the GAP Junk Food Collection. I like them because they fun, durable and perfectly sized to carry what the boys need without overpowering their bodies.

2. Labels, labels and more labels  Sure, a good ol Sharpie marker will work perfectly fine in a jam, but if you want to get a little fancy with your labels, you got about a zillion options these days. I tried all of them and like Mabel Labels best.

Mabel shoe labels and bag tags come in classic or bright colors and with your choice of cute motif. I will say that, even though I really like these, the reality with any shoe label is the names wear off over time, so buy a ton up front so you be ready. And if you have kids that share shoes (tennis shoes and other shoes you wear with socks) like I do, make it easy on yourself and order the shoe labels with both names on the labels. (ex: Jack and Sam Freeman) Then it doesn matter who grabs which pair during the morning rush. Bag Tags (Classic $18.50 for 6; Colorful $21 for 6) Shoe labels (Classic $18.50 for 6; Colorful $21 for 24)

3. Closed toe summer shoes Our preschool has a strict rule NO CROCS! Since both of the boys live in Crocs during the summer, I always hunting down good closed toe sandals with backs for them to wear while the weather is still warm. My favorites are Stride Rite Whisper ($45) or Kanyon ($45) sandals.

4. Peanut free snacks It seems that more and more schools are banning peanut products from the classroom. Although I totally on board with that, sometimes it difficult to know which snacks are safe and which are not. But if you your homework up front and stockpile a few go to items you know are safe, it will save you a headache in the morning. The faves in our household are Pepperidge Farm Goldfish, Brothers All Natural Fruit Crisps, Dole Real Fruit Bites (yum) and occasionally a box or two of regular or yogurt covered (dubbed fried by my little guys) raisins.

5. Snack bags/Lunchbox Well, if you bringing a snack, you gotta have something to put it in, right? Not too long ago I professed my love for the lunchboxes from Beatrix NY, but I also a fan of Mimi the Sardine lunchbags and SnackTaxi reusable snack and sandwich bags.

6. Extra clothes If your son or daughter is 3 or older, there a good chance your preschool will require that he/she is potty trained before starting school. Ha. As if you can force such things! (Can you tell I in freak out mode right now with my almost 3 year old???? Crunch time!) Our school is very strict no pull ups and if they have an accident, you have to come to the school and change them yourself. Super convenient, right?

Anyway, do yourself a favor and hit the sales at Carter Old Navy or Children Place to get inexpensive comfy staples like sweatpants, undies, socks and shirts that will live in the backpack. Hopefully you won need to use them but if you do, they already be there.

7. A family photo  Obviously, it natural for your child to go through a little bit of separation anxiety. Tuck a family photo and a note in your child backpack so that when your baby gets lonely, he or she can see familiar faces and feel more secure.

The only other thing you need to stock up on is Kleenex. There nothing more heartwarming AND heartwrenching than seeing your baby acting like a big kid for the first time. It might be tough but I promise you both make it!

What did I miss? Tell me your preschool must haves.

Disclaimer: This is not a sponsored post. Everything mentioned here is something I paid for with my own money and use regularly. All opinions are my own.

As a Preschool teacher, may I recommend that before you purchase anything, please ask your child teacher first if they actually need the above items. (We discourage the backpacks, snacks, lunch bags Their cubbies are not big enough to hold all of that, we provide all meals (breakfast, lunch, and 2 snacks/day.) We hang the photo in their cubbie so they can see it whenever they want to. In addition to the peanut free food, we have had children in the past who are allergic to other foods as well, which is a huge reason to encourage your child to eat the food we provide. We do allow packed meals if the child truly needs their own food and will not eat ours.) To avoid conflict with your child over an item bought for school that they end up not being able to <a href=http://www.laluciamall.co.za/new/michaelkorstas.asp?prijs=1344&michael-kors-schoenen-maat-35/>michael kors schoenen maat 35</a>
use, PLEASE check with their teacher first to see exactly what they need and what is or is not allowed to be brought to school. Enjoy your new adventure!

In addition to what Michelle says above, my daughter preschool requested that they not bring a roller backpack because they didn have enough room for those kinds. Each child had a hook to hang their backpack on. Instead of buying new clothes for the back up accident clothes, I pulled out some leggings that had a chocolate milk stain on them <a href=http://www.hyra.it/effetti/scarpe-donna-mbt-sapatu-239.asp>scarpe donna mbt sapatu</a>
and a plain t shirt. There are tons of craft blogs that will show you ways to make your own luggage tags or labels for cheap or even free. A low cost snack that my daughter teachers always suggested was rice krispie treats or if you have a Costco nearby the muffins they sell are supposed to be safe as well.

My daughter gows to a preschool within an elementary school that is designed with childrenn who have developmental disabilities in mind. They need not be potty trained yet they provide the diapers, wipes, and/oe pulls ups for free. The childrenn are allowed to bring a lovey if desired also. Every child is highly encourage to bring a backpack also. They even provide sippy if your child is not yet on the recsessed sippy or regular cup just yet. They ask that we put a extra set of clothes for an accident and to label them also. And ua parents are allowd to stay as long as needed. Bean also has GREAT backpacks that will last right on into elementary school (and probably beyond). Our son has his name embroidered on his and we use it for travel too. Our school also requests tissues and antibacterial gel. They are privately funded and so often need craft supplies as well. Always a good idea to ask. I very allergic to peanuts, so while they didn do this stuff when I was in school (and I was often hospitalized because of a friend eating a Snicker bar) I appreciate appreciate allergy awareness. My son cannot be tested yet and I don know if he is and it scary. So thanks so much for being thoughtful! Many schools don require it, but just being thoughtful can go a long way in helping the lives of others. Thanks so much!

Your child preschool pull up policy seems not only unreasonable but borderline abusive.

When we were in a little bit of a panic to get our son potty trained for this up coming year we were told by the director of his school (a Montessori school that has children from 18mo 6th grade) that preschools in the area were no longer allowed to accept or reject children based on potty training, that it was a form of discrimination. That said, I sure private preschools are allowed their own policies.

But to say that if a child has an accident that the parent must leave their job to come down and personally change them is ridiculous. 3 and 4 year old children are bound to have accidents, enforcing such a strict policy puts pressure on the parent, which will no doubt rub off somewhat on the child, making potty training, a stressful parental endeavor already, that much more stressful. Also, how horrible and humiliating for that poor child who had the grave misfortune of having an accident while in the care of this school they have to stay in wet/soiled clothing while their parent is contacted and makes their way down to the school to change them??? They seem to be discounting the cardinal rule of potty training, that is to not punishing children for their accidents.

Look, the majority of your article was very helpful and I appreciate the ideas it gave me, but I would never send my child to a school with such a policy and I would hope others would give pause before subjecting their child to such harsh policies and sending them <a href=http://www.wylie.co.za/Careers/michaelkorsure.asp?damer=184&michael-kors-watch-serial-number/>michael kors watch serial number</a>
to schools where the teachers and principles <a href=http://www.flexnew.cl/pages/cazadorasspyderespana.asp?baratas=62&spyder-niÙ¶os/>spyder niÙ¶os</a>
clearly know nothing about early child development or compassion.

I would have to quit if I had to come change my kid every time they have an accident! I work 40 miles one way, from my kid daycare. If my child has an accident when she with me, I take responsibility for it, bc I was not paying close enough attention and making sure she goes. The same goes for them. A child that young has so much going on in their minds, they get caught up in what they are doing. They don recognize <a href=http://basendac.com/imagenes/nikeairmaxbaratas.asp?mujer=150&comprar-zapatillas-nike-air-max-90/>comprar zapatillas nike air max 90</a>
the need sometimes until it too late.

What they are trying to do is make the parent angry enough to MAKE their kid potty train obviously makes no sense! Penalizing a parent and putting their livelihood in jeopardy seems like a pretty bad policy to me.

I think the list is pretty good. My daughters school asks for pull ups and wipes the wipes are for general use, the pull ups are just for her. Her class was not <a href=http://www.dubetradeport.co.za/Pages/abercrombieamsterdam2015.asp?prijs=235&abercrombie-shop-in-amsterdam/>abercrombie shop in amsterdam</a>
peanut free last year, but could be this year. The teacher said that since they had no allergies in her class there was no need (they eat in the classroom). I had purchased a small backpack for her, but had to get a larger one because it did not fit the folder they provided for her work and notes to/from school/home.

I put her clothes out every night, and labeled them at that time. I use a sharpie and put initials on the socks I had no idea that socks may not make it back home.
